On the basis of magnetic properties all the materials have been divided into three types:
1. Diamagnetic materials
2. Paramagnetic materials, and
3. Ferromagnetic materials
Diamagnetic Materials
The materials which are weakly magnetized in the direction opposite to that of magnetic field in which they are placed are called diamagnetic materials. Thus, these materials are weakly repelled by a magnet.
Examples of Diamagnetic Materials
Copper, gold, hydrogen, bismuth, antimony, air, water etc.
Paramagnetic Materials
The materials which are weakly magnetized in the direction of magnetic field in which they are placed are called paramagnetic materials. Thus, these materials are weakly attracted by magnets.
Examples of Paramagnetic Materials
Aluminium, platinum, uranium, chromium, salts of iron, nickel, oxygen, copper sulphate etc.
Ferromagnetic Materials
The materials which are strongly magnetized in the direction of magnetic field in which they are placed are called ferromagnetic materials. Thus, these materials are strongly attracted by magnets.
Examples of Ferromagnetic Materials
Iron, nickel, cobalt etc.
